Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive a baby after 12 months of trying. At age 35 and up, doctors may diagnose infertility after just six months of trying to get pregnant.

If you're dealing with infertility, you're far from alone. More than 6 million women aged 15-44 can't get pregnant or complete a pregnancy safely today. The team at Opulence Health and Wellness supports all patients struggling with infertility, and they’re ready to help you find solutions.

What causes infertility?

Infertility has many causes, and it can affect women, men, or both partners.

Some of the most common causes of infertility are:

  • Ovulation problems, such as failure to ovulate
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Fallopian tube damage or blockage
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Autoimmune disorders such as lupus
  • Low sperm concentration, shape, or motility in men

Many other factors may impact fertility, including medications, recreational drug use, increasing age, smoking, and drinking excessively.

At Opulence Health and Wellness, the team assesses your medical history, current health conditions, lifestyle habits, and all other potentially relevant factors. They determine the correct testing and diagnostic procedures to find the cause of your infertility.

Infertility testing often includes hormone tests, genetic analysis, and ultrasound imaging tests to evaluate your ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes.

You may need a minimally invasive exam like hysterosalpingography, which involves X-rays with contrast injection so the team can capture images of your uterine cavity and verify fallopian tube function.

How is infertility treated?

There are many medical approaches to infertility, including:

  • Medication to induce ovulation
  • Medication to stimulate mature egg growth
  • Treatment of underlying conditions like PCOS and endometriosis
  • Intrauterine insemination
  • In vitro fertilization, with or without a surrogate

Infertility is a highly individual challenge, so your treatment is very much your own decision.
