Endometriosis Q & A
What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which the tissue that normally lines the interior of your uterus, called endometrium, begins to grow outside of your uterus. It develops on your ovaries, fallopian tubes, or on other tissue types lining your pelvis. In rare cases, the endometrium grows outside the pelvic region.
This tissue grows through the same cycle as the endometrial tissue inside your uterus. It thickens, begins to break down, and bleeds as you move through your menstrual cycle. The problem is that, unlike the endometrium in your uterus that sheds during your period, the endometrium inside your pelvis is trapped and has no way to exit your body. That causes numerous problems and a wide range of painful symptoms.
What are the symptoms of endometriosis?
The most common symptom is widespread pelvic pain that often grows worse during your period. Additional symptoms include:
- Pain during intercourse
- Painful urination or bowel movements
- Heavy bleeding
- Fatigue
- Bloating or nausea
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Infertility
Because these symptoms mimic those of many other gynecologic conditions, endometriosis is difficult to diagnose, leaving many women to suffer for years before they gain an understanding of what’s causing their symptoms.
How is endometriosis treated?
Your doctor at Opulence Health and Wellness creates a customized treatment plan based on your symptoms, lifestyle, and plans for motherhood. It may take some time to find the approach that works best for you, and your treatment plan might change over time.
- Some treatment options include:
- Medications to control pain
- Hormone therapy to lessen or eliminate your period
- Conservative surgery to remove endometrial tissue
- Hysterectomy
Hysterectomy is only used in cases where more conservative treatments fail to improve symptoms, and for women who are sure they don’t want to become pregnant. If a hysterectomy is the best treatment path, your doctor helps you manage the hormonal changes that occur when your uterus and/or ovaries are removed.
If endometriosis impacts your fertility, treatment focuses on helping you conceive and carry your child to term. Pregnancy often eases endometriosis symptoms, but additional treatment is necessary after childbirth.
If you’re experiencing troubling symptoms and looking for answers, book a visit at Opulence Health and Wellness to determine if endometriosis is to blame. You can book online or call the office today.
